My name is Mark Wilson; I’ve been known as Red (aka Redherring) since High School.
When I started painting it felt natural to use the name Redherring to sign my work. The name is part of my history and I like that a red herring is something that misleads or distracts intentionally.
I want my art to be a distraction…
Just as the name Redherring plays with notions of identity and perception, my art practice also serves as a space to explore and articulate my experiences as a gay man within the broader social landscape I engage with.
I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts – Studio Practice at UNSW in 2025. I have commenced my Fine Arts Honours Research project this year with an aim to expand my understanding of art’s role in society and continue to explore various methods for my multi disciplined practice, including ceramics, print making, painting, sculpture and academic research.
My Honours research project is “Adorning the Gay Male Body: Subversions of Heteronormative Masculinity in Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture”. I am excited to see the work I create this year through a Research Led Artist Practice.
I have an interest in what is happening in the society, it’s politics and the world around me. I enjoy making art that inspires, sparks conversation and contributes to social change.
