“I want my art to be a distraction.” – REDHERRING, Gadigal Land, NSW, 2024

What do you call an emerging artist who describes multiple layers of lived experience through multiple layers of photography, poetry, clay and paint?

Not all of these mediums are applied in the same art work, necessarily, nor at the same time, necessarily. Distracting? Certainly.

Mark’s work could be described as a poetic representation of popular culture, delivered through the eyes and narrative of someone compelled to share their truths. He is an artist who explores multiple mediums to express different perspectives of the themes on which he’s focussed: themes that resonate deeply within him and reflect his experiences.

Mark (AKA Redherring) explores different mediums and experiments with different processes to combine techniques.  This includes printing on ceramics and paper, using typography on clay and in photography, street art style stenciled paintings and using written and visual language systems. When first seeing Mark’s work and meeting him a few years ago, I remember thinking “visual poetry” was a way to convey Mark’s creative practice.

Mark is an artist who doesn’t define his practice by a medium. His work spans two and three-dimensional configurations across various media utilising ceramics, paint, print, photography and typographical elements to share his experiences, stories and ideas. His sense of humour, technical prowess and meticulous attention to detail combine to invite viewers in; to take a closer look. Driven by the works’ visual appeal the work packs a powerful punchline that gets to the core of Mark’s story (The artist’s multiple awards over the past five years including several “Best in Show”, “First Prize” and “Winner People’s Choice” awards is testament to this). It is, however, at the same time a gentle provocation: this is me; I am multi-layered. This is my experience. What’s yours?
